Strategy Guide for Hanafuda Beginners
Here are some fundamental strategies to help you get started with hanafuda.
1. Prioritize Bright Cards
Bright cards are the most valuable in hanafuda. Five Brights (15 pts) and Four Brights (10 pts) yield very high scores, so capture bright cards whenever possible.
2. Memorize Key Yaku Compositions
Knowing which cards make up each yaku helps you quickly assess "what do I still need?" during a match. Start with these three:
- Boar-Deer-Butterfly: Bush Clover Boar + Maple Deer + Peony Butterfly
- Poetry Ribbons: Pine, Plum, and Cherry red ribbons
- Blue Ribbons: Peony, Chrysanthemum, and Maple blue ribbons
See the complete list at Koi-Koi Rules.
3. Koi-Koi Decision Making
The koi-koi decision is the heart of the game. Consider these factors:
- Large lead: Declare koi-koi to pursue bonus points
- Close score: Play it safe and declare stop
- Check opponent's captures: If they're close to completing a yaku, stop to secure your points
Summary
While hanafuda involves some luck, strategic decisions can significantly improve your win rate. Master the basics, have fun, and keep improving!
